Art In Your Heart?

“What art offers is space—a certain breathing room for the spirit.”
—John Updike

I am such a lover of art! When I was young, I loved to draw, color, paint, and write with beautiful penmanship, I even loved calligraphy! Artistic expression is as varied as our personalities. So just what is art? While there are many opinions of what is considered beautiful or inspiring, what I appreciate most is that we each have our own unique answer to this question.

I love the quote above from John Updike—art provides our spirit with a little breathing room. Art truly is a feeling that comes from within us; we cannot help but pause when we behold something striking. The beauty is that this insightful pause can be experienced by both the artists themselves and by those who view their art. Whether we are creating it or admiring it, art asks us to be with ourselves in the moment—how magnificent!

While I was in New York a few weeks ago, I went to a gallery, but I only saw a small portion of the exhibit. I really wanted to be with each painting! If you have never visited an art gallery or if it has been a long time (or even if it was just recently), make a plan to go. Maybe take yourself on a date. Honor each piece in the gallery, and consider asking yourself these questions:

  • What feelings does this piece hold for me?
  • Are there memories that rise to the surface with this particular piece?
  • What about this work of art draws me to it?

Spend some time in the feelings before moving on to the next piece. Allow your thoughts to fade away and give your spirit a chance to breathe in the beauty for a few minutes.

Is this something you would like to do one day? If so, put it on your calendar. When you return, I would love to hear from you.
