“Our birthdays are feathers in the broad wing of time.”
Birthdays give us an opportunity to celebrate another year of our precious and magnificent lives. Too often, as we start to approach the latter part of life, we begin to dread our birthdays! But, truly, birthdays give us a wonderful chance to reflect on where we’ve been and where we are and ask ourselves, “Am I doing what I came to this planet to do?” We can then look at the path we are on and decide which way we choose to go next.
When it comes to our loved ones’ birthdays, it is all about making them feel special, loved, and cared for. So let me give a shout out here: My husband is celebrating his birthday today. Happy birthday, Dick. I love you!
In our family, no matter how hectic and crazy the year has been, we treat birthdays as special, quality family time. A celebratory dinner, birthday cake (with ice cream for Dick), candle lighting, wish making, and gift giving—these are the usual things that go into making our birthdays special.
What is even more important for us, though, is giving the birthday “girl or boy” our complete Focused Attention. We do this to honor and love their presence in our lives and to show them that who they are really matters. It would be so wonderful if we treated every human being in our lives with this attention, in the moment, honoring their presence every day of the year.
How do we do this? How do we stay present to the people we love, not just on special occasions, but as often as possible? It all begins with cultivating a peaceful mind. (I bet you knew I was going to say that!) So, along with your recipe for your favorite birthday cake, prepare the following recipe, which also makes an excellent year-round gift to yourself and others:
