Stop & Smell The Roses

“The rose speaks of love silently, in a language known only to the heart.”

I love all flowers—they bring color, beauty, and fragrance into our lives. Call me old-fashioned, but I especially love red roses. This is not only because they are beautiful, but also to me, they radiate the energy of love.

Barb-StopSmellTheRosesOn our twenty-third anniversary this year, my husband, Dick, showered me with roses—almost literally! Ever since our first anniversary, Dick has been giving me a dozen roses for each year of our marriage. So, this year, that turned out to be 23 dozen . . . 276 roses!

Of course I love the roses, but what I love most about this “tradition” that Dick started is how incredibly happy it makes him! He is so excited each year to see what new design the florist has come up with. He truly is like a playful little boy, just loving these roses and me.

Roses have a long history of being associated with love. Maybe it is because when we sniff the scent of a rose, we are immediately filled with good feelings. One of my favorite old adages is “Stop and smell the roses.” What a powerful reminder this is to be in the present moment, appreciating life’s beauty. When I see roses, I am always in the moment.

I am also a huge essential oils fan, and rose oil is one of my favorites. The scent is grounding, sweet, and powerful. Each morning, I put a drop or two behind my ears. This is my perfume, and it fills the room with its wonderful aroma. When I inhale this fragrance, I am immediately transported to that source within me that is filled with unlimited self-love and well-being. No matter what I may be feeling in the moment, just a deep inhale is all I need to relax and “melt.”

Whether a single rose, a bouquet, a whole garden, or essential oil, the rose can elicit a wellspring of positive emotions in us. Roses and rosehips (the fruit of the rosebush) are said to have beneficial effects on the body. So, not only is the rose beautiful, it is so incredibly useful! Interestingly, the rose also has thorns to protect it. Sometimes, we may get pricked and think of these thorns as a nuisance, but actually, they exist to support and protect the rose’s existence.

I offer this to you today, while you stop to smell the roses: Take a few moments to feel your oneness with the rose. Like the rose, you are beautiful, useful, and supported! Like the rose, you can share your beauty with the world while growing toward your greater purpose with confidence and security!
