“Thanksgiving” in Action

When we look at the word “Thanksgiving” closely it is an action word. It evokes in us a sense of doing. On Thanksgiving Day in the United States, we have an opportunity to put all negative feelings, worries, and problems aside and focus on gratitude for the abundance in our lives. When we place attention on what we have rather then on what we don’t have, we begin to really notice that we are fortunate, we have abundance in places that we may not have been aware of before. This day, Thanksgiving Day, can be a day that we practice gratitude for every day, it’s not only about the food, but having an abundance of food on our holiday tables makes us truly blessed!

This Thursday, I invite you to put your thanksgiving into action. No negativity, when things start to happen and you’re feeling stressed, pause, take a few deep breaths, bring your mind back to the present moment, back to what you are grateful for in your life in this very moment.

Try this powerful exercise:

Begin by making a list of 10 things you are thankful for. Post your list up somewhere in your house; this will be a great reminder when the day begins feeling hectic.

Here’s my list:

  • I am thankful for this beautiful planet earth.
  • I am thankful for my life and continued health.
  • I am thankful for my family and the love and time we share.
  • I am thankful for my friends and their love and support and generosity of spirit.
  • I am thankful for my community and my country for providing a safe haven.
  • I am thankful for the spiritual masters, teachers, mystics, and saints who guide me along my path.
  • I am thankful for the opportunity to be of service in many wonderful, life-changing organizations.
  • I am thankful for Peaceful Mind Peaceful Life and the opportunity to spread peace throughout the world and for all those who support the mission.
  • I am thankful for the ability to express myself, share my thoughts, and be free to be me.
  • I am thankful for you. I love you.
  • Now when I put my list into action this is what it could look like:

    1) Recycle and reuse, 2) Treat my body with kindness, 3) Be fully present for my family when we are together, 4) Offer my friends support, love and attention, 5) Advocate for safety in other communities, 6) Share the words and ideas of my greatest teachers in my writings and my practice, 7) Express my appreciation to those I work alongside, 8) Continue to devote time to this amazing mission, 9) Use this gift to inspire, and 10) Share with you what works in my life for health and happiness.

    There is so much for each one of us to be grateful for. When we put our “gratitude in action” we become love and light in the world. We have the power to dispel darkness and bring about global change.

    My wish is that you feel peace, love and joy on this Thanksgiving day, and every day.
